COVID NYC Replace: Medical faculties seeing enhance in candidates amid coronavirus pandemic

NEW YORK CITY (WABC) – The COVID-19 pandemic has inspired the next generation of doctors as the number of students in the tri-state area who answer calls for service has increased.

The hope is to bring underserved communities to the front lines.

As the pandemic spread across the country, burdening hospitals and disproportionately affecting minority communities, many responded to the call for help – starting with medical school.

“We had a 26% increase in requests over the previous cycle, so that’s really an unusual increase,” said Dr. Valerie Parkas from the Icahn School of Medicine on Mount Sinai.

Unusual but understandable as nationwide applications to medical schools increased by an unprecedented 18% for the 2021-2022 school year.

Nationwide, applications to medical faculties for the 2021-2022 school year rose by an unprecedented 18%.

“We’re living through the history of medicine right now,” Parkas said. “You may think that there are major healthcare disparities that COVID sheds light on, and I want to make a difference.”

Ashwath Muruganand will join NYU Medical School this fall.

“In the face of the pandemic, we have seen many hospitals prioritizing living a healthy body over people with disabilities with low ventilation capacity,” Muruguanand said. “Seeing that really opened my eyes.”

Muruganand hopes, as a doctor, to be a voice for the underrepresented.

According to Dr. Geoffrey Young of the Association of American Medical Colleges, applications from underrepresented minorities have skyrocketed, with black applicants up 41% and Hispanic applicants up 24% year over year.

“As we lose doctors to retirement and our population continues to grow, I am very confident that this surge in medicine will continue,” said Young.

In this way, they can offer fair health care to future generations.
